Tofo Surf Club is our project in Tofo, near Inhambane in Mozambique. It is a surf club based on the model of our Surf Club (drop-in center) on Durban beachfront and was set up in 2018. It fuses surf coaching with mentorship and life lessons. It’s a diversion program from social problems that children face in the area and designed to inspire and develop them towards a positive future.
The project is run by four locals in the area and the two head coaches/lifeguards are Narciso Nhampossa and Mini Cho, both local Mozambican surfers and qualified lifeguards.
This project has been made possible through a partnership with our friends Scholas Occurrentes, which was started by Pope Francis. Tom met with Pope Francis a few months back to discuss this. At the launch of Tofo Surf Club in May 2018, the children in the project did a live link up with Pope Francis, who blessed the project and showed his enthusiasm and support.
